Fifty years ago a classic UFO case unfolded in the skies above Tehran, Iran. On the evening of September 18-19, 1976, residents of Tehran observed a multicolored aircraft hovering in the sky and informed officials at Mehrabad airport. The UFO was described as having blue lights on its right and left sides and a red flashing light in the middle. The object was moving in an erratic fashion and was changing colors as well as its apparent shape.
Iranian Air Force General Youssefi was contacted about the anomaly, and after observing the object first hand through binoculars he ordered an F-4 jet fighter to intercept the UFO. This incident took place during the reign of the Shah, whom was friendly toward the United States at the time and was able to obtain American military hardware. The F-4 Phantom aircraft was a two-man, state of the art, Vietnam-era warplane that sported sophisticated radar and weapons systems.
When the F-4 approached to within 25 miles of the object, the aircraft’s weapons, communications and avionics systems all failed simultaneously, but when he broke off the pursuit his instrumentation began working again. Every time he approached to within 20 miles of the UFO, however, the aircraft suffered the same systems failures. When his plane ran low on fuel, he was forced to return to base.
A second F-4 was vectored to intercept the object and the aircraft’s radar picked up a radar return that was the size of a Boeing 707 tanker plane. The object was described as giving off a flashing series of intensely bright strobe lights arranged in a rectangular pattern in alternating blue, green and orange colors. A second object emerged from the UFO and headed toward the F-4 at a high rate of speed, and when the pilot attempted to fire an AIM-9 air to air missile at the second object, his weapons control and communications systems abruptly failed. The pilot took evasive action and managed to avoid a collision.
Then a third object came out of the primary UFO and appeared to come to rest gently on the ground. As the F-4 crew continued to observe the landed object and mark its position they observed another UFO, a lighted, cylindrical object in the vicinity before they landed. The next day the F-4 crew was flown out to the area where the third object had landed by helicopter. Nothing was found there, but local residents reported hearing a loud noise and seeing a very bright light like lightning in the area that night.
The Tehran sightings were extensively investigated by both Iranian officials and the U.S. military. Reports about the incident were circulated among the U.S. Secretary of State’s office, the CIA, the Air Force and Army Chiefs of staff and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). A report on the incident was even included in President Reagan’s daily briefing. The 1976 Tehran incident is considered a classic aviation encounter as well as a case that involved control of the aircraft’s electronic systems.
Half a century later, on the night of September 19-20, 2026, UFOs were again sighted in the skies above Tehran, but this time the mysterious objects were captured on two videos from mobile phones. Both videos, shot at the Azadegon expressway, a major roadway in the Iranian capital, show a curved object with red, green and blue lights hovering at a low altitude in the sky. The object was reportedly completely silent and displayed no visible means of propulsion.
The two videos, lasting 23 and 15 seconds respectively, are hand-held, low-resolution images that lack background landmarks or scale. No metadata, such as exact filming locations, altitude, size, speed and distance have been provided. The Iranian government has not commented on the sightings, and the objects remain unidentified.
A number of explanations for the sighting have been put forth. American and Israeli air strikes have completely destroyed the Iranian air force during recent military operations, eliminating the possibility that the objects were Iranian aircraft. Iran continues to deploy drones on the battlefield, however, leaving open the possibility that the UFO could consist of a lighted drone or a cluster of multicolored drones. Other theories speculate that the objects could be illuminated balloons or kites. The footage was reportedly subjected to analysis by Elon Musk’s A.I. tool Grok, which verified that the videos appeared to be real footage recorded on a mobile phone.
As of this date, no explanation for the strange objects in the skies over Tehran has been forthcoming, but the apparent coincidence of these two significant UFO events taking place 50 years apart is uncanny and unprecedented.
